Rape-related Pregnancies, Adoption

The national rape-related pregnancy rate is 5.0% per rape among victims of reproductive age (aged 12 to 45); among adult women an estimated 32,101 pregnancies result from rape each year. These women must abort, keep the baby, or surrender the child to adoption.

Holmes MM1, Resnick HS, Kilpatrick DG, Best CL. Am J Obstet Gynecol. 1996 Aug;175(2):320-4; discussion 324-5.  Most rapes are not reported, so we can safely assume the number is much greater.

It is likely there are few adoption studies focusing on this as until recently, birth mothers did not have a voice.  Moreover, adoption agencies are well-known to falsify records.

One in three women have experienced rape or attempted rape.  It is safe to assume that a significant number of females have become pregnant as a result of rape and have surrendered their babies to adoption.  These mothers must survive a double whammy: PTSD from the rape and birthmother trauma syndrome from losing their babies.
